1. Who is Pugsy?

Well, I am Pugsy. My real name is Martin Pugh and I'm from a small town in North Wales. I compile my cheat file from all available sources and try to stick to the original guidelines for the cheats laid out by Marc Lafontaine. A large number of the cheats I do find myself - I've been producing cheats for computers since 1985 covering various platforms including the C64 and the Atari ST, with little more than a machine code monitor and a good knowledge of 6502 and 68000. Most of the skills I used back then to find the cheats are still relevant with MAME but obviously the programming skills are no longer required (well that's not quite true with ROM cheats). In fact, now anybody can find cheats for MAME and it's often more enjoyable cheat finding than actually playing the game! I welcome all cheat contributions and will include them in my irregular but massive updates. Remember anticipated release dates of updated cheat files have a tendency to slip - it's a big task!!

10 FEBRUARY 2007 MAME is now an amazing 10 years old, thanks to everybody who has worked on it over that time. The cheat file isn't far behind either, nine years ago in a few days the first version of the current cheat file was released. So I'd like to thank everybody who has contributed over the last nine years and apologies for some of the long periods between some releases. Along with the normal changes of new cheats and various bug fixes/display changes of existing cheats there are two fairly big changes in the cheat archive from this release, that will improve functionality/user friendliness and cheat file loading/editing times.
Firstly, non-essential documentation has been removed from the cheat.dat file and included in a separate cheat.txt file.
Secondly, the various fighting game move list cheats have been removed from the cheat file as the extra weight of cheats for some games was causing MAME to crash when using the cheat engine in those games. The removed cheats are included for this release only as a separate 'removed cheats 10022007.dat' file just in-case you simply can't live without move list cheats.

20 DECEMBER 2006 The christmas 2006 release, the cheat file is slightly smaller than the previous release as the changes in the cheat engine have allowed a considerable reduction in the size of the ddsom + clones cheats without effectively sacrificing any cheats but it has made the cheat options for those games a LOT easier on the eye and a LOT more user friendly.

14 MAY 2006 Surprise!! Obviously not a massive update this time, but there are a few new cheats and I've taken the opportunity to convert the cheat file so it's now exclusively in the 'new' cheat format which will make viewing/editing a lot easier on the eye.

14 APRIL 2006 Woohoo...a new record, almost 2 years since the last update. I'll try not beat this PB in future, I'm still surprised there's any Arcade Machines left to emulate. There's still a fair few games with no cheats so an update may well happen in the next few weeks/months if people submit some cheats for them and give ShimaPong a break before he burns out.

21 APRIL 2004 How time flies.....thought I'd better release a new cheat file as it's been so long. Once again it's an enormous update which has taken weeks to compile, and a big thanks again to the people who've posted cheats on the forums to make my job easier.

21 APRIL 2003 Yes there's been a new cheat file release, bet you thought it was never coming! It's been a long job and yet another enormous update (some things will never change!). There really is too many people to thank you all individually besides it's been so long I've probably forgotten half of you :-( Though I suppose I have to mention KelvSYC and his unhealthy interest in CPS and Neo-Geo fighter games if nothing else than the sheer number of cheat forums cheat posts he's made in the last year or so. Cheat File statistics:- over 93000 cheat lines for 3788 games [Out of the 3826 games that MAME 0.67 supports] (This cheat file is FULLY compatible with MAME 0.67 and can be used with earlier and later versions without too many problems).

22 DECEMBER 2001 Merry Christmas! It's a minor bugfix release with a few new cheats thrown in, MAME 0.57 should hopefully released so it was time to clear the decks....I'm guessing it's either going to be a xmas present or a new year release with the 2000 copyright games. Thanks to all the people who have posted cheats on the cheat forums. Cheat File statistics:- 65026 cheats for 3150 games [Out of the 3155 games that MAME 0.56 supports] Only 5 games with NO cheats at all - a new record! (This cheat file is FULLY compatible with MAME 0.56 and can be used with earlier versions too without too many problems).

28 NOVEMBER 2001 Another release....and so soon after the last one! ;-) Thanks to all the people who have posted cheats on the cheat forums. Cheat File statistics:- 64124 cheats for 3137 games [Out of the 3155 games that MAME 0.56 supports] (This cheat file is FULLY compatible with MAME 0.56 and can be used with earlier versions too without too many problems).

14 SEPTEMBER 2001 Well I have to say this is the biggest update ever (double the number of cheats), mainly due to the fact that it's been so long since I've made a proper release which was due to the broken cheat engine in the 0.37 BETA cycle and me playing catch up after. However, the cheat engine is now all hunky dory (thanks in no small part to Ian Patterson) and will even work on MAME32 (the newer the version the better). If you've followed my past advice you would have been reading the cheat forums and would have been downloading the WIP cheat file so this cheat file will be no surprise for you. Anyway, as it been so long since the last release I can thank everybody who helped me out and supplied cheats indvidually because I didn't keep a record of them...the cheats credits list in the cheat file has been updated though. Cheat File statistics:- 55189 cheats for 3068 games [Out of the 3102 games that MAME 0.54 supports] (This cheat file is FULLY compatible with MAME 0.54 and can be used with earlier versions too without too many problems) [UPDATE: OOPS the cheat stats in the above text were incorrect, I'd cut and pasted them from the last update...yikes - I've now updated them]

18 MAY 2000 First update since the Athlon upgrade, I thought updates may become more regular with a faster computer - when in fact the opposite is true. I can now do SO much more with a powerful computer that cheat finding has taken a bit of a back seat for a while. This update has to be classified as the biggest single update yet! I've a few changes to the structure of the cheat file which may hopefully allow me to do more regular updates (time permitting), though with the changes to the cheat engine in the next few betas it's going to be a case of 'suck it and see' for now...... I've also decided to archive the old cheat files from this moment on, in case anybody want's them for older MAMEs. Well it's a bit late in coming but it's finally updated, and what an update it now has 26835 cheats for 2071 games (This cheat file is FULLY compatible with MAME 036Final 037Beta1 and 37Beta2). 17 JANUARY 2000 Well it's a bit late in coming but it's finally updated, and what an update it now has 23223 cheats for 1906 games (MAME 036B13 emulates 1951 games). It's been a looooong update for me so it's time for a rest and a touch of RAINE. Great thanks to the cheat contributors, who were:-

14 NOVEMBER 1999 Doh, typical - got delayed in this release and they release a new MAME Beta, seeming I didn't release a cheat file for MAME 36B7 I thought I'd better release the cheat file for 36B8 so people will stop emailing me about it. MAME 36B9 is now out, no promises on when the next 'proper' update will be - maybe a few days (unlikely) or Christmas week (good for me). In the mean time though remember if you want a specific cheat then use the Message Board and post a request!. Again this cheat release has LOTS of new cheats and bug fixes. 12 OCTOBER 1999 Broken promises again, meant to release the update a few days ago but there was still a few loose pieces to tie up. Well, the cheat file for MAME 36B6 is here, as usual you can expect cheats for most of the games introduced in 36B6 along with a large dose of cheats for some of the earlier emulated stuff. 25 SEPTEMBER 1999 Finally here's the cheat file for MAME 36B5, in addition to the cheats for the 36B5 games a lot of the earlier emulated games that previously had no cheats now have cheats. Most of the cheats for this release have been posted on the cheat forums - thanks again guys! I've found a few cheats myself - but no were near as many as usual :)). Forgotten Worlds seemed a vey popular game to find cheats for it seems most people who submitted cheats for this release have found some for it - I think it's now sorted!
